Technical specifications

Technical specifications

The standard Crescent staircase specification is as follows:

a) folded steel plate treads bolted to steel plate stringers.
b) vertical balusters to each side of the treads, supporting a handrail.
c) angle/channel framework landings with decking and balustrading to match the flight.

However, in addition to our standard range of staircases and finishes, we specialise in supplying special diameter stairs and balustrade designs to suit architects' specific requirements.

Spiral staircases
Spiral staircases are designed to BS 5395 Part 2 and cover a wide range of applications from industrial and commercial to domestic applications. The designs are based on a range of standard tread and baluster types and large quantities of standard components are carried in stock.

Straight internal and external staircases
Straight or dog-leg internal and external staircases are supplied with folded durbar or plain plate treads and flat bar stringers and balustrade designs are an extension of our standard spiral staircase range. Feature staircases can be supplied with stringers, treads and balustrading to suit an architect's specific requirements. Handrails can be powder coated mild steel, polished stainless steel or polished brass.

Helical staircases
Helical staircases are designed to architects' specific requirements and are often the main feature staircase. The most commonly used stringers are manufactured from 300 x 12 mm flat mild steel plate but we can also supply channel, box section and tubular designs. Balustrading designs and finishes are to architects' specific requirements.

Finish
External staircase components will have a hot dipped galvanised finish to BS EN ISO 1461. This gives lasting protection against corrosion without the need for further paint finishing. All steel components to the staircase can be supplied with a powder coated finish to any standard RAL colour.

Treads
Standard wooden treads are available in iroko, sapele, ash or beech hardwood finish, either solid or edged for carpet recess.

Load-bearing
Our stairs are capable of supporting a UDL of 4.5 kN/m2 to the treads and landings and 0.74 kN/m2 to the balustrading as standard. However, balustrading to take increased loadings can also be designed to suit.
