Crescent Spirals in Transport Museum

A spectacular spiral staircase from Crescent of Cambridge, the market leaders in spiral stairs, has been installed in the main entrance of the recently refurbished London Transport Museum Depot at Acton Town in West London. As the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden is only large enough to house a fraction of the Museum's collection, the Museum has now brought together all its other treasures under one roof at Acton Town.

In addition, as many of the items on show are trains, carriages, trams and buses, the museum has included a viewing gallery above these exhibits and Crescent also provided the staircases as access to this viewing gallery for the Museum visitors.

Richard Butler, managing director of Crescent says; "Large museum pieces such as trains and trams shouldn't only be viewed from the ground and the Museum recognised this with the installation of a viewing platform. We were delighted to work with them to provide the staircases for access to the platform. The depot is visited by many enthusiasts and is open to the general public at certain times of the year, therefore the staircases needed to accommodate large numbers of people without taking up valuable exhibition space. We were delighted to contribute to the display of our transport heritage."

Crescent of Cambridge manufactures and installs high quality spiral, straight flight and helical staircases for a wide variety of needs. Since introducing the first modular stair in 1972, the company has grown dramatically and has been market leader for many years. Crescent's unique system design consists of a comprehensive range of basic components which can be rapidly customised, using the very latest data processing technology (powerful CAD systems and engineering-based software) to generate bespoke designs and cost-effective solutions to any given stair requirement.

A helical staircase, installed by Crescent of Cambridge, provides a stunning focal point for the reception area at the new Jewson Central Office building in Coventry. The staircase was designed by Design Core, the architects on the project, and sweeps up to the first floor with a sleek stainless steel balustrade and wooden treads. The bespoke staircase has some unusual features including a glass insert in each tread snaking up the steps and elegant supports for the balustrade.

"It was not easy to get the idea of the staircase over to the client, so we asked Crescent to produce some graphics of the staircase concept. The graphics illustrated how the staircase would work and the client was delighted with it." says Brian Winward of Design Core.

Richard Butler, managing director of Crescent says, "We were delighted that our exceptional computer graphic skills were able to help the architect demonstrate the concept to the client. Our CAD systems are among the most leading edge in the industry and can prove very helpful in overcoming some of the difficulties architects can have when explaining a unique concept to a client. The final result is an excellent example of how architects and manufacturers can work together to develop original elements in a construction project."

Spiral staircases, designed and installed by Crescent of Cambridge, provided the finishing touch to the penthouse apartments of a new scheme for Bellway Homes in London Docklands. The recently finished block of flats included spiral staircases in the penthouse duplexes to help create a sense of space and enhance the stunning waterfront outlook from the floor to ceiling window, which stretches across two floors. The staircases have open wooden treads, with black railings and handrails once again creating an atmosphere of open space and allowing the panoramic view to be seen from as much of the flat as possible.

Richard Butler, managing director of Crescent says, "The apartments were built for owner occupation, as well as investment for renting. Therefore, features within the flat must add value that is attractive not just to the owner but also to those renting up-market London homes. A spiral staircase, which enhances the sense of space creating an open and airy apartment, satisfies perfectly the current desire for fashionable minimalist design.

"We have worked with Bellway Homes on a number of projects and have built an excellent working relationship."

-- Crescent of Cambridge to feature in BBC 'House of the Future'

Crescent of Cambridge, the leading manufacturers of spiral staircases, are to feature in the BBC's Dreamhouse project. The company was chosen by Integer, the research team behind the project, because of its state of the art products and its reputation for being at the leading edge of spiral staircase design.

Crescent, who have installed over 20,000 stairs since the company began over twenty-five years ago, offer true innovation in spiral staircase design, to give new ambience to any interior. Crescent's unique modular system and streamlined manufacturing process enable the company to offer staircases unrivalled by any other manufacturer.

The idea behind the Dreamhouse, which will be aired throughout January in a slot on Tommorrow's World, is to create a model 'house of the future'. The programmes, presented by Carol Voderman, feature the standard model 15 Crescent spiral staircase, with ribbed treads, as a focal point of the house.

The brainchild of Integer, an organisation set up to build affordable, green and 'intelligent' houses, the Dreamhouse will also feature the latest technology and greenest design. Despite its exceptional design and interior, the house was designed to accomodate an ordinary family and has since been put to the test.

Evelyn Pellow of Integer, says : "The Integer team drew up the specification for the house and then began to search for the companies best placed to provide products for each part of the specification. When it came to the staircase, the team already knew about Crescent's reputation for state of the art spiral staircases and its ongoing research programme. Crescent was therefore a clear choice to provide the staircase for the Dreamhouse project".

Crescent of Cambridge's Managing Director, Richard Butler, is delighted to be involved in the project : "To be part of such an interesting and high profile project is a great achievement for us. The Dreamhouse is the ultimate house for the future and we are delighted that our model 15 spiral staircase was chosen to be such an important part. At Crescent we have the ability to create both spiral and straight staicases to any design specification and finish to best suit the surroundings. Integer are only one of our satisfied customers".

Crescent stairs are available in a variety of finishes and hundreds of colours. The service package includes everything from design (using sophisticated CAD software) and manufacture, through to installation, at competitive prices. All Crescent stairs comply with BS 5395 parts 1 and 2.
